Waarom heet een coffeeshop een coffeeshop (en geen wietshop)?

Amsterdam is beroemd om de coffeeshops. Maar nee, het is geen coffeeshop, het is meer een winkel voor wiet. En dat veroorzaakt verwarring in zowel coffeeshops als coffee shops in Amsterdam.

Hoe het begon

Natuurlijk kun je koffie kopen in een coffeeshop in Amsterdam, maar wiet kopen in een coffee shop? Toch is de link tussen die twee makkelijk te leggen.

In het Amsterdam van de jaren zeventig werd wiet namelijk gekocht in coffee shops of koffiehuizen waar je koffie kon drinken. In het dagelijks leven werden deze ‘wiet winkels’ coffeeshops genoemd. Door het gedoogbeleid konden ze met hun ‘menukaart’ naar buiten treden.

Ter vergelijking: Café is de Franse naam voor koffiehuis en hier geldt een soortgelijke situatie. Sinds het einde van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw worden cafés vooral geassocieerd met alcoholische dranken, terwijl het woord café in het Frans letterlijk ‘koffie’ betekent. Et voila!
